Occupational Health and Safety Assessments

Workplace health and safety assessments help organisations identify hazards, understand exposure, evaluate current controls and prioritise practical improvements. The suitable method depends on the work activity, worker group, chemical, noise, ergonomic or safety concern and the applicable Malaysian requirement.

Quick guide: Start with the concern and affected work group. Share the process, shift pattern, chemicals, equipment, incidents, existing risk assessments and previous monitoring so the assessor can determine whether a general review or competent-person assessment is required.

Common Assessment Pathways

NEED RECOMMENDED PATH SELECTION CUE
General workplace risk HIRARC or focused safety review Tasks, hazards, controls and action priorities
Hazardous chemical exposure CHRA or related exposure assessment Chemical inventory, SDS, process, ventilation and worker groups
Noise exposure Noise risk assessment Sources, similar exposure groups, calibrated measurement and controls
Ergonomic concern Ergonomic risk assessment Posture, force, repetition, duration, tools and work organisation

Competence and Reporting

Certain Malaysian assessments require a DOSH-registered or otherwise competent person. A sound report should describe the representative work observed, measurement settings where used, limitations, risk findings and a practical control plan.

Common Questions

Is HIRARC the same as CHRA?

No. HIRARC is a general hazard identification and risk-control process. CHRA is a specialised assessment for health risks from chemicals hazardous to health and follows its own competence and reporting requirements.

When is noise measurement needed?

The need depends on excessive-noise identification and the applicable Noise Exposure Regulations. A registered Noise Risk Assessor can define representative measurement and reporting.

Can assessment findings support PPE selection?

Yes, after higher-level controls are considered. Contact Safetyware to connect assessment findings with suitable training, monitoring or PPE options.
