Workers connect to the line via a lanyard or energy absorber attached to their harness, and can move laterally along its length while remaining continuously protected.

Depending on configuration, a horizontal lifeline can function as a fall-restraint system (keeping the worker from ever reaching an unprotected edge) or a fall-arrest system (allowing controlled movement with the system engineered to arrest a fall, including the load-sharing and deflection across the whole line, if one occurs).

Engineers fix end anchors and intermediate posts to reinforced concrete, structural steel, or purpose-built stanchions. They engineer these components to withstand both static and fall-arrest loads. The cable or rail runs between the anchors and often includes an energy absorber. This helps reduce fall-arrest forces transferred to the supporting structure. Workers connect using a sliding shuttle, rope grab, or lanyard that moves along the lifeline. This allows continuous movement without disconnecting at each anchor. What to Verify Before Installation

  • Structural capacity — has a competent person confirmed the roof/structure can bear the static and dynamic loads a horizontal lifeline (and a fall-arrest event) will impose?
  • Fall clearance and swing-fall risk — is there enough clearance below the lifeline, and did you assess the risk of workers swinging into the structure after a fall?
  • Component certification — cable, energy absorbers, anchors, and connectors should be certified to recognised standards (e.g. EN 795 for anchor devices, EN 353/354/355 for related connecting components) and used as a matched, compatible system.
  • Number of simultaneous users — horizontal lifelines have a rated maximum number of users; exceeding it compromises the engineered load-sharing design.
