OSHA Releases New Arc Flash Guidance

What Does the Updated Guidance Say?
OSHA’s new guidance focuses on two leading causes of arc flash injuries and fatalities:
- Incorrectly assuming work is de-energized: Many workers mistakenly believe equipment is safe to handle without PPE, leading to severe injuries.
- Working on low voltage without justification: A common myth is that low voltage (120/208V, 277V, etc.) is not dangerous, resulting in workers neglecting proper PPE.
Who Does This Apply To?
This guidance applies to all commercial, industrial, and residential electrical workers in the U.S. It also includes operators, maintenance personnel, and others working on or near energized equipment at 50V and above.
Why Has OSHA Issued This Guidance?
Although arc flash PPE has been available for over 30 years, incidents continue to occur. Between 2000 and 2010, compliance with NFPA 70E helped reduce injuries. However, since 2010, the injury rate has plateaued because many workers still do not wear the appropriate PPE. Industry experts have worked with OSHA to address these ongoing risks, resulting in this new guidance to improve worker safety.
